How Long to Dry PLA (and Whether You Need To at All)
PLA dries at 50 °C for 6 hours — but at normal indoor humidity most PLA never needs drying at all. When it does, how to do it without ruining the spool, and how to store it so you never do it twice.
The quick answer
Dry PLA at 50 °C for 6 hours. Never go above 55 °C. Above that, PLA softens enough to sag and fuse into the winding on the spool — the filament survives, but you'll fight tangles for the rest of the reel. If your dryer only does whole-number presets, 50 °C is the safe choice; 55 °C is the ceiling, not the target.
Does your PLA actually need drying?
Here's what most drying guides won't tell you: at normal indoor humidity, plain PLA usually doesn't need drying at all.
PLA is one of the least hygroscopic common filaments. Left on an open shelf at around 50% relative humidity, it settles at an equilibrium moisture content well below the level where print quality suffers. It doesn't keep absorbing forever — it stops at what the surrounding air can push into it. A spool that has sat in a normal living room for months is typically still fine to print.
PLA does need drying when:
- Your air is genuinely humid — consistently above ~65% RH (coastal climates, basements, summer without air conditioning).
- It's a filled or specialty variant. Wood-filled PLA is the thirsty one — the wood fibres soak up far more water than the plastic around them. Silk and matte PLA sit slightly above plain PLA. Carbon-fibre PLA behaves about the same as plain.
- It shows symptoms (next section) despite your slicer settings being known-good.
- It's been stored somewhere damp — a garage, a shed, an unheated room through a wet season.
If you're printing fine, you don't have a moisture problem. Don't dry filament out of ritual — every heat cycle is a little bit of stress on the material for zero benefit.
Signs of wet PLA
PLA is also the most forgiving material when it is damp — its symptoms are mild compared to the dramatic failures of nylon or PETG:
- Fine stringing and wisps between travel moves that retraction tuning won't fix.
- A rough, slightly fuzzy surface where it used to print glossy and clean.
- Faint popping or crackling from the nozzle — that's steam escaping. If you can hear it clearly, the spool is properly wet.
- Slightly weaker layer bonding — parts snap along layers more easily than they should.
The reliable tell is change: the same profile, the same spool, worse results than a few weeks ago. That's moisture, not settings.
How to dry PLA properly
Filament dryer (best)
Set 50 °C, run 6 hours. Longer doesn't hurt at this temperature, but 6 hours takes a normally damp 1 kg spool to effectively dry. A very wet spool (audible popping) can take a second cycle.
Food dehydrator (very good)
Many dehydrators hold 50 °C more accurately than cheap filament dryers. Same numbers: 50 °C, 6 hours. Make sure the spool isn't touching the heating base.
Kitchen oven (risky — know your oven)
Ovens can work, but most home ovens overshoot badly at low temperatures and swing ±15 °C around the setpoint — and PLA's ruin-the-spool threshold is only ~5 °C above its drying temperature. If the oven swings to 65 °C, you get a spool of fused spaghetti. If you must: verify with a separate oven thermometer first, use the lowest setting, prop the door if it runs hot, and never walk away for the first hour.
The variants
- PLA, PLA+, matte, silk: 50 °C / 6 h, max 55 °C.
- PLA-CF (carbon fibre): 55 °C / 6 h, max 60 °C — the fibre fill tolerates slightly more heat.
- Wood-filled PLA: 50 °C / 6 h, max 55 °C — but expect to dry it far more often; wood fill absorbs several times the moisture of plain PLA and it shows in surface quality first.
After drying: storage decides whether you ever do this again
A freshly dried spool starts reabsorbing the moment it meets room air. How fast depends entirely on where it lives:
- Sealed box or bag with desiccant: the gold standard. Fresh silica gel holds a sealed container at roughly 20% RH — at that humidity PLA essentially cannot get wet. A dried spool stays dry for months.
- Sealed without desiccant: locks in whatever the air was when you sealed it. Fine if you sealed on a dry day; pointless if you sealed in a humid room.
- Open shelf: acceptable for plain PLA in a dry home — it will drift toward room equilibrium and, at ~50% RH, sit there harmlessly.
One habit that matters more than any container: recharge your desiccant. Silica gel saturates silently — after a few weeks of active use in a sealed box it's holding nothing. Indicating beads tell you with a colour change; recharge them in an oven or dryer per the packet (typically 100–110 °C for indicating types) and they're as good as new.
How often should you re-dry PLA?
Work from storage, not from a calendar:
- Sealed with fresh desiccant: don't — it isn't absorbing anything worth drying out.
- Open shelf in a normal-humidity home: rarely to never. Re-dry when symptoms appear, not on schedule.
- Open storage in humid air (65%+ RH): every few weeks of exposure, or keep it sealed between prints instead — sealing is less effort than repeated drying.
- Wood-filled: assume it needs drying if it's been out more than a couple of weeks.

Common questions
Can I dry PLA at 60 °C to speed it up?
No. PLA's glass transition starts around 60 °C — the outer windings soften, sag under tension and weld together. The few hours saved aren't worth a ruined spool. Faster drying is what higher-temperature materials get; PLA's ceiling is 55 °C.
Can drying fix brittle PLA that snaps in the tube?
Sometimes, partially. Brittleness has two causes: moisture (drying helps) and polymer ageing from repeated heat cycles and time (drying can't undo it). If a spool still snaps after a proper 6-hour dry, the material itself has aged — retire it to test prints.
Do I need to dry brand-new, factory-sealed PLA?
Almost never. Reputable spools ship dried, with desiccant, in barrier bags. Open it and print. The exception is a bag with a torn seal or no desiccant inside — treat that like an open-shelf spool of unknown history.
Is a "dry box" while printing worth it for PLA?
For plain PLA in normal air — not really; it absorbs too slowly for a print's duration to matter. Where feed-from-dry-box shines is nylon, PVA and TPU. For PLA, focus on storage between prints instead.
